History

Sacramento County is one of the original counties of

California that were created in 1850 when the state joined the

Union.

The county gets its name from the Sacramento River which

constitutes its western border. The river had been named by

the Spanish cavalry officer Gabriel Moraga “Santisimo

Sacramento” (Holy of the Sacraments) in reference to the Catholic Eucharist.

Alexander Hamilton Willard, a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition (first crossing of the United States by land to the Pacific) is buried in the Franklin cemetery in the county.

Geography

The total area of Sacramento County is 2498 km2, divided into 2422 km2 (96.95%) of earth and 78 km2 (3.05%) of water.

The county is located in the center of the Central Valley of California, the state's main agricultural region, and in the Gold Country. The majority of county land will delta between the river Sacramento and the river San Joaquin south to fifteen kilometers north of state capital Sacramento, and to the foot of the mountains of Sierra Nevada in ballast. An outgrowth south of the county descends into the bay of San Francisco.

The main rivers of the county are the American River, the Sacramento River and its tributary the Dry Creek.
