Napa is warmer in summer than Sonoma County in the west, or as Santa Barbara County, another wine region in Southern California. The vineyards of the county therefore generally prefer to cultivate varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, while Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are more the specialties of domains of Sonoma. Some wine-growing sugars in the Napa Valley are better suited to some grape varieties than others, and the Los Carneros appellation, which also overlooks Sonoma County, is known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The Mount St. Helena stands among the Mayacamas Mountains north of the valley at 1323 meters above sea level, making the second summit of the Bay Area of San Francisco. It includes the Robert Louis Stevenson State Park. To the east of the valley stands Hood Mountain (838 m).
Napa County has a fauna and flora varied, including endangered species such as the flower Lasthenia conjugens (more commonly known as Contra Costa goldfields) and grass Castilleja neglecta or Tiburon Indian paintbrush.
Finally, Napa County is home to one of the largest natural cavities developed in the tuff: Clay Cave (180 meters of development)
