History
The name of the county is derived from the Cape
Mendocino, named in the 16th century by Andrés de
Urdaneta in honor of Antonio de Mendoza or Lorenzo
Suárez de Mendoza. This Cape, however, does not lie in
Mendocino, but in neighboring Humboldt County.
Mendocino County was established as early as 1850,
but initially had no self-administration, because there were almost no whites in the area. In 1855 the Indian reserve "Mendocino" was established here. In the Mendocino War of 1859, most of the Indians were killed and the reserve was dissolved again in 1866. After that began the settlement, all remaining Indians were relocated to the relatively small Round Valley Indian Reservation, regardless of their tribal affiliation. In the Round Valley War of 1887 died a large part of the survivors. By the end of the nineteenth century, all Indian tribes from this area were almost extinct. These included the Yuki, The Pomo - and the Wintun - Indians. Today, about 1,500 indigenous people live in two small reserves and eight Rancherias.
By 1900, the coast of the county was a center of the wood industry with sawmills and railways to the coast for the transport of wood across the lake. The settlements were only accessible by ship; there were no transport routes over land. It was only later that it became known that the huge local trees had grown by 1,000 years and therefore would require correspondingly long renewal.
Geography
