History

Inyo County was formed in 1866 from parts of the Mono

County and Tulare County and is named after the Inyo

Mountains.

During World War II, 10,000 Japanese and Japanese

Americans were interned in the Manzanar War Relocation

Center between Independence and Lone Pine.

Natural history

Inyo County has several natural attractions:

• Mount Whitney is the highest point in the United States

• outside Alaska, at 4,418 m above sea ​​level.

• Badwater in the Death Valley National Park is the lowest

• point in the United States at 85 m below sea level.

• Copies of the Long-lived Pine (Pinus longaeva) are among the oldest trees in the world.

• Owens Valley is the deepest valley on the American continent. 

Geography

Inyo County is located between the mountain range of the Sierra Nevada with among others the Mount Whitney in the west and the state border to Nevada in the east. In between lies the Owens Valley, stretched from northwest to southeast, of the Owens River, with all the significant settlements of the county. The valley is accessed by US Highway 395.

The Death Valley National Park, with Badwater as the deepest point in America, lies in the east of the county and accounts for almost half of its area. The shares of the counts in the Sierra Nevada as well as part of the Inyo Mountains and the White Mountains belong to the Inyo National Forest, a national forestry under the administration of the US Forest Service. Some of the national forests in the Sierra are designated as the Wilderness Area under the names John Muir Wilderness, Golden Trout Wilderness and South Sierra Wilderness, the most severe class of nature reserves in the United States.

In the county, Mount Whitney and Badwater are both the highest mountain in the United States outside Alaska and the lowest point in America.
