Kern County (founded in 1853), is one of 58 counties in the US state of California. In 2009, the county had a population of 785,953 inhabitants and a population density of 37.22 people per km². The county seat is Bakersfield.

History

In the 18th century, the region was controlled by the

Spaniards. In 1772, Commander Don Pedro Fages

was the first European to explore it.

​

We discover Walker Pass in 1834 which allows penetrating the chain of the Sierra Nevada. In 1848, after the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, California passed under the sovereignty of the United States. The county was then officially organized in 1866 and takes its name from the Kern River and topographer Mr. Edward Kern.

The wells of Lakeview are the theater between 14 March 1910 and September 1911 of the largest oil spill in the American continent with 1,230,000 tons of lost oil.

Kernite was also discovered in the area in 1926. On the 21st of July 1952, an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 killed 12 people and caused considerable damage.

According to the Census Bureau, the county has a total area of ​​21,165.4 km²; of which 21,113.6 km² is land area and 51.8 km² (0.25%) is water.
