History
The first inhabitants belonged to various Amerindian tribes:
Wiyot, Yurok, Karut, Chilula, Mattole and Nongatl. The county
itself was created in 1853 by cutting out the County of Trinity.
The county is named after the bay of the same name, named
after the famous German scientist and explorer of the
eighteenth
century Alexander von Humboldt. The Humboldt Bay was
discovered only 1806 by a hunting group, which wanted to
catch sea otter. Until 1849 no whites came. In 1850, Douglas
Ottinger and Hans Buhne gave the bay its present name.
It was precisely at this point that the Mexican-American war was over. Shortly thereafter, California became the state of the USA, and the boundaries between the various counties were established. First, the area was part of the east-facing Trinity County, before 1853 became the coastal part of Humboldt County.
An important village of the Wiyot Indians was called Tuluwat (also Tolowot ). It was located on Gunther Island (also known as Indian Island) in Humboldt Bay. It is estimated that the village was founded around 900 AD. An archaeological feature is a waste pit with shell shells, which is 24,000 m² in size and 4 m deep. On the Island of the Wiyot massacre of 1860, on the night of 26 February 1860, between 60 and 200 men, women and children were killed by the Wiyot tribe. The famous writer Bret Harte, who was then living in Arcata (next to Eureka) testified and recorded the atrocities.
Geography
According to the Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 10,495 km² (4,052 sq mi), of which 9,253 km² (3,572 sq mi) are land and 1,243 km² (11.84%) are water.
